Growth market India: LMT finishes gear hobs in Pune
Pune is one of the most important centres of the Indian automotive industry. Alongside Tata Motors, which attracted worldwide attention with its small and inexpensive Nano car, and Bajaj, one of the world’s largest manufacturers of two- and three-wheelers, numerous international vehicle producers and automotive suppliers have located in Pune. LMT is now expanding its local presence with a new finishing facility for gear hobs.

“With our own finishing plant on the spot we are above all targeting manufacturers of motorized two- and wheel-wheelers and, to a certain extent, car makers that use hobs up to a module size of 3.5,” explains Venkat Venkatasubramanian, managing director of LMT India.
During the initial phase in Pune LMT will primarily finish blanks that have already been hardened at LMT Fette in Schwarzenbek. LMT has equipped the production facility with a complete set of grinding machines for that purpose. The operators first received extensive training in Schwarzenbek and then a team from Schwarzenbek went to Pune to further improve the skills of their Indian colleagues and support the production launch. After the official opening of production by LMT’s owning family, the first 20 hobs will be delivered to customers before the end of March.
